Actors in history cannot possibly document the
history that they are themselves making, that's how
it works. We started out looking at textual
documentation which students do quite a bit in their
own web. Going beyond that however, we do not find
many, except for the effort of Linda and Ahlu who
documented the Vision Forum. At the same time we're
also inspired by the pho-documentation done by TH
Rusli Jamaluddin and PM Talhah. Here we shifted our
focus, looking for photo-documentation which belongs
to the realm of many. Gene Harn's work is impressive
although it remains very much private photography.
We are looking for photographic documents which
would be helpful for the studio community. Farah's
effort uploading her project photos and allowing for
others to do the same is commendable. |

Communication, although we had emphasised English
because of the presence of many international
students, does not actually depend on any particular
formal language, but the language of the "people".
This is especially so in conducting our community
work. The first to register to lead the Kampar
Community Team was Hii Kah Sing. Faiz led the Balik
Pulau Community Team and he has always been the hub
of Year One communication (he wanted to use our
groupmail for other courses, although finally he got
to use the FB, thanks Farah). Mohd Muzammil or Am
who took over the Jelebu Community Team when Mohd
Nazmi Akbar gave in, brought the team back in one
piece. |

Having
one's own web is one way of documenting and learning
from what one is doing. For some this is a new
experience but for a die-hard blogger like
Sui Min, this must be noted: "I feel this
idea of having a site to compile and log all our
assignments is interesting... won't be easily
forgotten, with the chance of going back in time now
and then..." Although it is not a construction
from scratch, which demands another set of
knowledge, working on what is given and exploring
the possibilities of customization is one way we can
learn to design.
Roslinda explored a flashy site although not all
the projects were uploaded yet then.
Gene Harn's was complete with his photograhic
flare as well, but not descriptive enough.
Fan Keyang's is down to earth with basic
pictures and the text and good maintenance. |

"Release/ drop the balloons at mindight" sounds
eezy-peezy. The next thing is "design the
release/drop involving 150 people, in the city
square." that's something else. From the making
of the HBP Balloonmen right up to when the clock
struck 12 on 31 August 2009, Pui Yeen's team was
working quite consistently, right through the
release test one day before the event. Pui Yeen
finally got herself to install the balloons in the
fountain which couldn't be turned off. Amelia was
her wet partner all ready with their raincoats.
While that was happenning, the balloons to be
dropped were also installed. Led by Faiz, his team
had also been diligently working on the release
mechanism which highly depended on the wind
conditions of Times Square. It is for the effort of
filling the space, from the plaza floor to the sky,
that we award the Space-Designer-Constructor.

Objects in 3D began after knowing the the structure,
space and light in nature and in man-made objects.
Beginning with a small gift, bamboo was explored as
a cube and how it could be transformed. Finally
students were to apply the construction experience
in the community. Three communites used bamboo as a
primary material although the focus is more on the
untamed environment, Kampar as opposed to the
"kebun" in Jelebu and "kampung" in Balik Pulau.
Attacking the bamboo clusters upon arrival in Kampar
was an Iranian, Parshan. His stamina was'nt
sustainable enough, it was systematically followed
through on the following day, hauling out a total of
80 pieces, was Yue Wei. And Steven cooly led the
assemblage of the pieces as a bridge construction,
over one of the tributaries. |

If
each student can come up with 17 ways to arrange a
set of 10 cardboard boxes, each group of 10 students
would then have innumerable solutions to what would
be the construction to exhibit their best works. The
greatest difficulty is to go by one critic who asks
why is it not arranged this way and after setting it
up, another critic comes by to ask the same question
suggesting a different solution. Woon Chin Ong,
finding it very hard to face this situation, was
almost dazed. Farah, not offering any arguments,
gave up after the nth trial. Shazliza, also having
in mind the team members' decision, apart from the
comments she received, attempted to make final
changes right up to the 11th. hour. It is for her
steadfastness that she is awarded the Process
Designer-Constructor. |

Mohamad
Sidiq left Jelebu with two children in tears.
Missing him dearly the children kept in touch with
him long after the project was done. Low Cheau Ming
had a similar, if not a stronger bond to Pak Su, one
of the residents who provided them hospitality when
they were in Kampar. The latter who felt that he was
awarded with female siblings from USM, started
talking about life which Cheau Ming had lent her
listening ears so much so that their separation at
the end of the project was a very highly emotional
affair. Firdaus Amran has also got Pak and Mak Su
somehow, to keep asking for his whereabouts and how
he's doing. For the surprise and joy that she has
given Pak Su, we single out Low Cheau Ming as the
Designer-Constructor for the National Community
Service. |

How can
there be a seamless relationship between an actor,
images (still or moving) on the screen and the stage
on which the interaction happens. Pui Yeen's was
very well rehearsed, pulled on to the stage by the
coordinator, later rained on by RUS101 only to leave
the space in a VW she drove the week before, very
technical. Sui Min in contrast, showed a lot of
thought using the screen prompt "stand here" to draw
her to the space and subsequently raised the
question "why look at things in one way?" and left
the space with a gratitude, quite elegant in the use
of the animation including the basic colours.
Shankar came in at the last minute, stuck his USB
drive in the laptop and stormed on to the stage to
shuffle and then left the space to sprawl on the
floor. Shankar- THE
TRANSFORMATOR. |

B E Y O N D
GA : Our Special Mention |
| There are of course
many personalities from RUS101 which deserve a
mention. Here are a few who are always there in
the studio in their special ways.
Sui Min, despite her height, is vocally not as
conspicuous. This is quite unlike her who's
hobby is "making a lot of noise at home".
Very polished in all manners, she's certainly not
the average girl next door. Wishing that she'd
shared more in class rather than delimiting it to
just
her secret her.
Gene
Harn reminded Sui Min to update her blog. As a
die-hard blogger himself he refuses to pen his
thoughts down, but instead directs his energy into
photography, and of late, pumping it into an
international marathon of sorts. Reading and quoting
architects, this athelete needs to get to the
finishing line also as an aesthete. |
