Course on the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage in the Asia Pacific Region 2005:

Preservation and Restoration of Wooden Structures

The four-week international course focusing on the preservation and restoration of wooden structure was successfully concluded on 28 October.

The course, held in Nara, Japan, was organized in cooperation with the Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU), the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (NRICP, Japan), and ICCROM (the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property). Financial support for the course came from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan. The location of the course in Nara was ideal, given its important historic environment and the fact that many conservation institutions and specialists are located there.

Fifteen participants from around the Asia Pacific region took part in the course and explored the following issues:

history of conservation of wooden structures in the region;
methods of investigation of wooden structures;
institutional aspects of conservation;
ideas and concepts regarding conservation and restoration;
the technology/techniques of restoration of wooden structures;
international frameworks for cooperation.

Participants also had an opportunity to have an in-depth discussion, facilitated by ICCROM, on their own possible future activities in the area of conservation of wooden structures.

The course utilized both classroom activities and visits to sites such as Nijo-jo Castle, Shirakawa-go, and Kanazawa City.

Member States represented: Cambodia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.
