Law, Policy and Administrative Aspects"

The Workshop was jointly organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Hiroshima Prefecture Government. It was designed to increase awareness of protected area management among government administrators and other experts in the Asia-Pacific region and Japan. It was aimed at providing guidance on how to approach the management of the World Heritage properties including both natural and cultural sites. The UNESCO Convention concerning the protection of the world cultural and natural heritage including its operational guidelines was presented and discussed by Natarajan Ishwaran, Chief of the Natural Heritage Section, World Heritage Center, UNESCO. Other presenters in the Workshop included Dr. Daniel Navid of UNITAR, Peter Valentine of IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and Duncan Marshall of ICOMOS. The Workshop also included study tours at two of Japan’s World Heritage Sites, the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine at Miyajima town and the Genbaku Dome at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.  The study tours were guided by Dr. Masayuki Miura and Dr. Norioki Ishimaru of Hiroshima University. The Workshop was attended by more than 30 participants from the Asia-Pacific countries including Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Malaysia was represented by Associate Professor Dr. A. Ghafar Ahmad from School of Housing, Building and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia; and Mr. Desmond Dick Cotter from National Parks & Wildlife Division, Forest Department, Sarawak.
