The Restoration & Preservation Award

Presented by the Ministry of Higher Education, Saudi Arabia

Dr. A. Ghafar Ahmad, a lecturer at the School of Housing, Building & Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang has won the Restoration and Preservation Award from the Ministry of Higher Education, Saudi Arabia on last 31 January 1999. The award, conferred for the first time in conjunction with the centennial celebration of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was presented by Saudi Arabian Higher Education Minister Dr. Khalid Ben Mohammed Al-Anqary at the opening ceremony of the Symposium on Mosque Architecture at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Dr. A. Ghafar Ahmad, who was involved as the Project Manager in the restoration of the Acheen Street Mosque, Georgetown, Penang, received a certificate of recognition and a handsome prize money of 50,000 riyal (RM52,000). A total of 17 conservation projects from all over the world were nominated for the award and Dr. A. Ghafar's nomination, the Acheen Street Mosque, was singled out as the only winner in the Restoration and Preservation Award Category.
