The recently concluded 4th International Conference on Built Environment in Developing Countries (ICBEDC) 2010 was held to a roaring success on December 1st and 2nd, 2010 in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The third edition in this series of annual conferences organized by the School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP) carried the theme, ‘A Better Tomorrow Begins with A Greener Today’. The 4th ICBEDC 2010 saw the participation of 130 registered participants with 60 of them being international participants.  A total of 140 papers were accepted to be presented during this 2-day conference under the banner of the 4 major sub-themes of Architecture and Urban Design, Building Engineering and Technology, Urban Planning and Tourism as well as Construction and Project Management. Oral presentations were held in 22 parallel sessions over the course of the two days. The 4th ICBEDC 2010 also saw the introduction of the Best Paper Award which was given to a total of 9 papers from the respective sub-themes. The 4th ICBEDC 2010 is seen to have achieved its objective of garnering and gathering academicians, researchers and practitioners of the built environment under a single common roof to contemplate about issues vital to the sustainability of the construction and built industry.

Therefore, the 5th ICBEDC 2011 will continue to be held with the aim of making it grow into a renowned avenue and platform for global intellectual discourse. This year we continue our commitment in promoting sustainable practices in the development of the built environment in developing countries as we are still very much in the process of seriously adopting and implementing the prophesy of a truly sustainable environment. Issues on global warming, growing scarcity of non-renewable energy resources, loss of biodiversity, shortage of water supply and the long term degradation of the ecosystem along with health and poverty problems are among the most important issues which represent a growing and escalating risk for human societies and their economy.

We are here therefore delighted to invite you to attend the ICBEDC  2011 in Penang , Malaysia . We look forward to offering researchers and practitioners a platform for presenting research and academic papers and exchanging as well as critically discussing new frontiers from research on practical implementation and theoretical knowledge in the domain of sustainable built environment.
