Background Kedah

Kedah Darul Aman is situated at the North-Western corner of Peninsular Malaysia and covers an area of over 9,400 square kilometres.
It is the fourth largest state in Malaysia by population and has a western coastline fronting the Straits of Malacca.
Kedah's population of approximately 1.3 million, 71.8 percent are Malays.The chinese make up 18.6 per cent, while Indians comprise 7.79 percent.
Except for some hilly areas around Gunung Jerai (Kedah Peak), it is covered largely by flat terrain.
It is also divided into 11 administrative regions or districts, namely Baling, Bandar Bharu, Kota Setar, Kuala Muda, Kubang Pasu, Kulim, Pulau Langkawi, Padang Terap, Sik, Yan and Pendang.
The state is the largest rice producer in the country, with over a third of the nation's supply coming from its rice fields.
Today, industrialization is the main development thrust in the state's economy and the manufacturing sector is ranked as the fastest growing sector in Kedah.
Alor Setar, the state capital, is 97 kilometres from Penang port while the major industrial centres are only 25 - 35 kilometres away.
The Northern region is part of the Northern GrowthTriangle comprising Northern Malaysia, North Sumatra and South Thailand.
The advent of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle will benefit industrial sectors like electrical and electronic, rubber, wood-based product, food industries, fabricated metal and light engineering industries. return
