Kulim High-Tech Industrial Park

The Kulim High Technology Park was proposed as a pilot project in the field of advanced technology and R&D and is expected to be the national centre for advanced technology and innovation.
The government requested the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to formulate the concept of the KHTP.
The Japan International Coorperation Agency (JICA) was commissioned to prepare a detailed development plan for Phase 1 Industrial Zone comprising 250 hectares.
The Kulim High-Tech Industrial Park (KHTP) is taking shape in the hinterland of Malaysia own silicon valley.

The KHTP measuring 1 448 hectares will be developed as an integrated hi-tech colony in which factories manufacture sophisticated, space-age products.
The KHTP is targetted as a centre for the promotion of hi-tech manufacturing industries and those concerned with R&D combined with production facilities or just R&D by itself.
The KHTP will be growth centre to act as the catalyst for the restructuring of the presently labour-intensive industrial structure to one that is high technology oriented.
The KHTP is close to a new high-way, port and international airports for easier import of raw materials and export of finished product.
The KHTP is also near two universities - Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang and Universiti Utara Malaysia in Kedah. These universities will provide support in terms of research and testing facilities and manpower training.
The KHTP will be implemented in two phases. Work on the first phase has already begun and is expected to end in 1996. The Kedah State Government is prepared to build factories at the park according to the investor's specifications.
The KHTP will have six zone - Hightech Industrial Zone, Urban Zone, Housing Zone, Amenity Zone, R&D Zone and Institutional Zone.
