Route Map - KL LRT

PLANNING

Phase 1 of the system will cover 12 km between Ampang and Jalan Sultan Ismail. Of the 12 km, 9.5 will be at ground level, on former railway reserve land. The remaining 2.5 km will be elevated approximately 5 m above the city's streets, running from Puduraya, along Jalan Tun Perak to cross Jalan Raja Laut and then following the eastern bank of Sungei Gombak to terminate opposite the Sime Darby Building along Jalan Sultan Ismail.
Phase 2 of the Light Rail Transit system from Gombak to Petaling Jaya is expected to begin early next year with scheduled completion by the end of 1997. The massive project, to be undertaken by Renong Subsidiary Putra Sdn. Bhd. at a cost of about RM3.5 billion, involves 24 stops along the 30 km-line. It begins from the Gombak terminal and marshalling yard, running along Jalan Melati before swinging left along Jalan Tumbuhan.

How It Started

In the early 1980s, the Kuala Lumpur Master Plan Transportation Study recognised the need for a fully intergrated rail-bound system to improve the city's transportation infrastructure. In the late 1991, Sistem Transit Aliran Ringan Sdn. Bhd, or STAR was formed construct, own and operate the first phase of the LRT. In December 1992, STAR concluded the Franchise Agreement with the Malaysian Government, forming the contractual basis between the two parties for the 60 year Franchise period.

How It Works

The LRT network is using modern, electrically-powered trains operating on double tracks to offer a reliable and comfortable alternative to travelling by bus, taxi and car within Kuala Lumpur's urban area. Phase 1 of the system will cover the 12 km betweenAmpang and Jalan Sultan Ismail. The thirteen stations along the route will be located to serve both exosting and developing residential areas, enabling passengers to travel speedly to their desired destination in the city centre. return
